EVENING CHARGE: ADULT WORKSHOPS AT SHORECREST

We have all heard of how wars have influenced history, but just as important (or perhaps even more important) is the influence on the drink you might be holding in your hand right now. In an exploration of how we became who we are today, we will examine the very beverages that have created our modern world and how they interacted with our ancestors. This is history you can taste, feel, and experience in the same human tradition that dates back hundreds if not thousands of years. Beverage samples will be available to make history even more palpable!

Session 3: Tea and Coffee
Session 4: Rum and Coca-Cola

 

In this beginner’s course, we will wander through conceptual factors intrinsic to understanding and creating visual art. Meditations from art history, philosophy, and psychology and some hands-on exercises will comprise the bulk of this class. Topics include the nature of creativity, along with the value of ambiguity, and abstraction. Examples derive mainly from conceptual, contemporary abstract, and non-objective artwork. Optional homework is available for those who wish to extend course instruction.

The screaming! The fainting! The hysteria! We’ve all seen the footage of Beatles concerts in the early-mid 1960s but what were the deeper social and cultural implications of “Beatlemania”? What was going on in the time period that made the Beatles' impact on American society so massive? In this class, we will examine topics such as the “rise” of the American teenager, the subsequent moral panic of juvenile delinquency and how the conservative social norms within American society at the time were first challenged by Elvis Presley and the Beat generation of the 1950s. All of these people and events paved the way for the Beatles, making the time ripe for a “British invasion” of America in the early-mid 1960s. Of course, there will be a hefty dose of mid-century popular culture, Beatles songs, images and film clips as well!

Have you ever wanted to learn how to paint with oils in a relaxed, laid-back and judgment free environment? If so, this is the class for you! The course will cover materials and techniques and give you the opportunity to paint and experience your inner van Gogh (or Picasso)! Paints and canvases will be provided; all you need to bring is an open mind, a desire to have fun and maybe learn a little something along the way.
