Shorecrest 2021-2022 Flexible Learning Program

by: Nancy L. Spencer, Head of School
This weekend our seniors become Class of 2021 Shorecrest Alumni, and on May 28 the school year is officially over! School milestones like these feel especially celebratory this year after successfully navigating the many challenges presented by COVID-19. We look toward the 2021-2022 school year with optimism and insight.

One lesson reinforced this year is that the Shorecrest experience is best done in person. Teachers, students and families have shared the myriad of struggles posed by online learning. Shorecrest was one of the few schools in the Tampa Bay Area that offered the breadth of in-person and virtual experiences this year. While we are proud of what we accomplished, our initial Flexible Learning model is not sustainable, nor is it necessary as the threat of COVID-19 thankfully continues to lessen. Still, some community members may need a virtual learning option due to COVID-19 and we are committed to providing that.

Shorecrest will offer a modified Flexible Learning program for the 2021-2022 school year for specific, documented medical reasons. There are two categories of Flex Learners for 2021-2022.

Short Term Flexible Learners are enrolled in Flex due to a COVID infection or determination as a close contact of an infection. These students may enroll in the program only for the duration of their Department of Health mandated isolation or quarantine, and return to campus once the isolation or quarantine period ends.

Long Term Flexible Learners may enroll in Flex due to a documented COVID-related medical reason and must commit to the program for nine weeks at a time. Students on the Long Term Flexible Learning Program may transition out of Flex and onto campus only on dedicated Flex In/Out Days. Those dates for 2021-2022 are:
Monday, October 11
Tuesday, January 4
Tuesday, March 15

Long Term:
Students with COVID-related
Medical Reasons
Short Term:
Students on Quarantine/Isolation due to Contact Tracing or Infection
  • Must have appropriate documentation from healthcare provider stating COVID-related medical reason
  • 9-week commitment at a time
  • Transition back to campus on dedicated Flex In/Out Days
  • Students who are determined to be close contacts of a confirmed COVID case
  • Enrolled in Flexible Learning for the period of quarantine or isolation
  • Return to campus following period of quarantine or isolation

Because 2021-2022 Flexible Learning is limited to students with documented medical reasons, Flex students will not be permitted to participate in extracurricular activities as long as they are enrolled in Flex.

Aspects of the 2021-2022 modified Flexible Learning Program may differ from this year’s program. Additional details are forthcoming from each division and will be included in a revised Flexible Learning Handbook in the Start of School documents that are published in July.

Shorecrest will continue to support the Florida Department of Health in contact tracing any potential exposure for confirmed COVID infections on campus. Fully vaccinated individuals who have documentation on file with the Shorecrest Clinic are excluded from contact tracing and are not required to quarantine after exposure unless they are exhibiting symptoms. The CDC defines “fully vaccinated” as 14 days after your second dose of a Pfizer or Moderna vaccine, or 14 days after your single dose of a Johnson & Johnson vaccine. To submit documentation of vaccination, contact Nurse Donna Conroy at

The Shorecrest Health and Safety Task Force will continue to meet over the summer to review policies and protocols for the upcoming school year. Updates will be communicated via email, posted to, and shared on Shorecrest social media. As always, Shorecrest policies are created to protect the health and safety of our community

Thank you for your support of Shorecrest during a uniquely challenging school year. Updates will continue to be included on
