Start of School Forms Due August 5

by: Nancy L. Spencer, Head of School
Mid-July is typically the time we publish Start of School information and required forms to help families begin to think about the transition from summer to school. While this year is very different in so many ways, some of the tasks required to start the school year remain unchanged. Your login credentials and instructions on how to access PowerSchool, the Shorecrest learning management system, as well as a checklist of action items for families required before we return to school were emailed July 15 around 5pm.

Please review this information and complete the required documents by August 5.

The plans and details outlined in PowerSchool are what we intend as of July 15. As an administration, we are ever-mindful of the events and circumstances outside of our control. We are watchful and aware and are prepared to make changes as appropriate to maintain the health and safety of our school community.

While we are planning a return to in-person, on-campus learning, remember, ALL families may choose the Flexible Learning Plan to start the school year - or at any time during the school year - should your family's circumstances or attitudes toward the current COVID-19 situation change. If possible, we would like to know your choice by August 5 so we can plan the Flexible Learning cohorts as best we can. If you choose Flexible Learning, then begin to feel more comfortable about being in-person, on-campus, we are prepared to welcome your children back whenever you and they are ready.

We as a school are planning for many contingencies and we understand that families are as well. We strongly recommend exploring the Tuition Refund Plan Insurance; the plan is applicable whether your child is enrolled in the Flexible Learning Plan or in-person, on-campus. It also applies if the school is in a Distance Learning scenario. The plan will refund 75% of tuition upon a qualified non-medical withdrawal after 14-days of attendance - those 14 days include either in-person, Flexible Learning and/or Distance Learning. The deadline to purchase this insurance for the 2020-2021 school year is Friday, July 31. Details are online here and listed in the documents on PowerSchool.

To keep families connected and informed we hosted a Parent Q&A with School Leadership and Health & Safety Task Force members. The webinar was recorded and can be viewed here.

One of the many reasons families choose independent schools like Shorecrest is our autonomy and ability to act swiftly in the best interest of our students. Our ability and experience being flexible is more important now than ever. We appreciate your support and understanding as we work to educate our students under new and unique challenges.

The next update will be published on August 1. In the meantime, please read the documents in PowerSchool thoroughly and carefully. There is a lot of information, but it may answer some questions, and may bring up others. We are here to support you and your family in the year ahead.
