This year has been crazy, to say the least, but our Relay For Life event leadership team, our sponsors, faculty support, and all the teams participating have still managed to do exceptional things to help fight cancer!
The Relay season started off in the beginning of the year with full force and was run by Chair Kirsten Price ‘21, Fundraising Chair Emery Camp ‘20, Relay Events Chair Lindsey Leonhirth ‘20, and Community Engagement Chair Lauren Epstien ‘21. We had a challenging Pre-Relay Lunch, and were able to come up with a great compromise after Upper School closed early for the State Soccer Finals, to have a Pre-Relay break. The Middle School teams sold favorites like Chicken Minis, donuts, and lots of breakfast foods.
The Middle School teams were also involved in our Relay For Life movie night in Charger Commons. This event was a total success, and the movie “Toy Story 4” was a huge hit! The Middle School teams really brought their A game to this event with impressively decorated cupcakes, lots and lots of candy, and so much more.
Another event highlight was the carwash at PDQ. Not only did this event bring in money from the carwash, but we also received some of the earnings from the food purchased at PDQ that day. This event was a huge success and we raised around $500.
All three of these early events helped raise money for the American Cancer Society, and even though our main Relay For Life event was canceled - with the generous support of our entire community we still managed to raise over $38,000!
Headmaster Mike Murphy is the person who has made this event possible for the past 15 years. He has been an active member in supporting the American Cancer Society, and has done so much to bring this important organization to the Shorecrest community. From grilling hotdogs at the Lower School lunches, to shaving his head in support of those who are fighting cancer, Mr. Murphy has been so inspirational to all of us to help this important cause! We would like to say a very special thank you to Mr. Murphy for all the great years of Relay at Shorecrest. He will be greatly missed next year, but all he has done will not be forgotten.
To wrap up the 2020 Relay For Life, the event Leads hosted a virtual Spirit Week, honoring the fighters and survivors, and those who have passed from cancer. All the posts can be seen on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter using #shorecrestrelay or on the Relay For Life Instagram feed.
We are so proud of all the work that went into the events this year and cannot thank everyone enough for their support. We still hope that there will be a day when no one has to hear the words “you have cancer,” and until that day comes, we will continue to fight.
