Richard Rho Honored for Excellence in STEM Teaching
by: Rachel Barrett, Director of Marketing and Communications
Congratulations to Upper School Computer Sciences teacher Richard Rho, the recipient of the 2019 Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching Award from The Barrett Family Foundation. The award recognizes outstanding Tampa Bay Area high school teachers who share their energy and enthusiasm for science or mathematics through creative and innovative methods thereby cultivating student interest in these two fields.
"Mr. Rho was recognized for his efforts to provide innovative classes and experiences to Shorecrest students including incorporating 3D Design and Digital Film into his classes," said Headmaster Mike Murphy. "They also appreciated his collaborative work with teachers of other disciplines and grade levels."
For example, students in Mr. Rho's 3D modeling course used CAD (computer aided design) software to create 3D printed Braille keys. They shared the keys with Ms. Rebman's third grade students to augment one of their projects.
Rho adds, "My engineering students are working on designing custom LEGO bricks to be used in the Lower School Makerspace."
Richard Rho is an educational technology leader, a design thinker, engineer and innovator who joined the Shorecrest community in 2017. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from Columbia University and a Master in Educational Learning Sciences and Technology from the University of Pennsylvania.
"One of my goals as a teacher is to create courses that engage my students, teach my students valuable skills that they can use in college and in their careers, and give my students opportunities to apply themselves in open-ended problem solving," says Rho. "I am honored to receive this award and I would like to thank the Barrett Family Foundation for this recognition."
